Parker Plays Ravel
Fri Jul 26, 2024
Orchestra Hall
This summer’s Roaring Twenties theme begins in earnest with this concert. Summer at Orchestra Hall Creative Partner Jon Kimura Parker takes the stage to perform Ravel’s sparkling Piano Concerto in G. Ravel composed this concerto after a four-month concert tour of North America, which included frequent visits to Harlem’s jazz clubs with George Gershwin. Known for his dynamic performances, Parker will deliver a performance of this beloved concerto that you won’t want to miss! Plus, rising star Stephanie Childress conducts lively suites from three pieces written for the stage that illustrate the enduring influence of jazz on orchestral music.

Artists
The Grammy Award-winning Minnesota Orchestra, now in its second century, ranks among America’s top symphonic ensembles, with a distinguished history of acclaimed performances in its home state and around the world; award-winning recordings, broadcasts and educational engagement programs; and a commitment to intentionally build concert programs to feature more works by composers of color, exploring music both contemporary and historic. This past fall, Danish conductor Thomas Søndergård began his tenure as music director.
Strong ideas, lucid communication and intensely focused energy are among the qualities that define Stephanie Childress among today’s most compelling young musicians. Recently appointed principal guest conductor of the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra, her musicianship and command of a broad scope of repertoire have already led her to establish herself on both sides of the Atlantic.
Known for his passionate artistry and engaging stage presence, pianist Jon Kimura Parker has performed regularly at the Berlin Philharmonic, Carnegie Hall, London’s South Bank, the Sydney Opera House and the Beijing Concert Hall. In 2019, he was appointed the Minnesota Orchestra’s first-ever Creative Partner for Summer at Orchestra Hall, a new role in which he is serving as a creative force behind the Orchestra’s summer festival and appearing each summer as a host, performer and personality. He is also artistic director of the Honens International Piano Competition and artistic advisor for the Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival.
